I am learning that I really don’t need to travel outside of Connecticut to find luxury accommodations. There are actually plenty to choose from here in the state and the Saybrook Point Inn and Spa in Old Saybrook is probably the most luxurious of them all. I had the pleasure of experiencing this property last week and after one night, it has become my favorite spot here in Connecticut.
Big thanks to the owners of the property and their PR firm who arranged the experience for me. I actually thought I was just going to drive down, take a few pictures, tour the property and then head back to my ordinary life. However, the “experience” included spa service, dinner, overnight accommodations and brunch.
After my arrival, I was given a quick tour of the property. I fell in love with the Three Stories Guest house immediately after entering the building. The house opened last May and was designed for hosting corporate retreats or quiet getaways for couples. As I looked around the beautifully designed house, I felt as if I walked onto the pages of Town and Country, magazine.
We cut the tour short so that I could make my 11:00 am massage at Sanno Spa which is located in the main building. I’ve been to a lot of spas and Sanno is definitely not your basic Spa. Guests are greeted and guided to a locker room where we slip out of our things and into a Sanno Spa robe and sandals. I was hoping that I would have a few minutes to relax in the relaxation room, but my masseuse was waiting for me the minute I stepped outside. The massage was absolutely great. That thing, whatever that was, that she did with my neck and shoulder at the end of the massage freed my body from the stress and tension that had been building for several weeks before my visit.
I kept myself occupied after my massage by checking out the grounds and the marina which was unfortunately, empty during my visit. There is a beautiful light house styled building on the property which can be rented out as a honeymoon suite for guests. A real, picture perfect lighthouse sits in the distance behind the building. Their banquet facilities, by the way, is one of the best in the state and is “the” location for weddings and receptions.
Guests have the option of two pools; an indoor pool with a shower and whirlpool and an outdoor heated pool. There is a fitness center that is available to guests and the Fresh Salt restaurant with their old English styled bar is an inviting pub for the thirsty. Old Saybrook is a quaint little town with lots of cutesy antique shops, the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, remnants of an old fort and the town is also where the Collegiate School of Connecticut was chartered in 1701. The Collegiate School, later moved to the City of New Haven and is now known the world over as Yale University.
Later in the afternoon, I received a text alert that my room was ready. Since I had already seen the common areas of the house including the lower floor with their private bar and pool area, I was ready to see the room. When I swung the door open I immediately felt the regret of not inviting my other half. A king size bed, a massive bathroom with a whirlpool tub, fire place, wrap around private balcony with views of Long Island Sound and stunning views of that picturesque light house awaited me. It’s the absolute most romantic place that I had ever stayed by myself. I took advantage of the solitude though to rest and relax.
My dinner at Fresh Salt was not the most favorite part of my experience. I always try to keep an open mind and use these opportunities to sample things that I wouldn’t otherwise. The presentation and service was excellent, but I left there with a grievance for Valencia rice. In the end, it boiled down to a matter of personal preference on how the texture of my rice. I have heard other great reviews, however, Valencia rice just was not my thing.
Their AMAZING brunch the next morning made up for the experience, however. I was so impressed with the two rooms of seemingly endless choices of delicious, freshly prepared, lunch and breakfast items that I booked a date with my Mom for their annual Mother’s Day brunch. It is truly the ideal place to take a parent or loved one to express your appreciation and gratitude for all that they do.
Overall, it was a really great experience and I am grateful that I had the time to relax and rejuvenate. I am so looking forward to spending a few more nights there. It is a great getaway and hopefully next time I will be able to bring him along.
